Title: Ubuntu Graphics Acceleration
Hi,

I am running Firefly-rk3288_Ubuntu_1604_ 2016_1018 and I found that the graphics is very slow. When I run the browser, scrolling is noticeably lagging. When I run glxgears, the FPS is about 72-82 FPS.

Can I know if GPU acceleration is working under Ubuntu for 3288?

With 2D acelaration you justa have Debian.

Latest from ROCKCHIP: http://rockchip.wikidot.com/debian

we don't have any Linux disto in ARM rk3288 with graphics working well

Hi,
Does it mean that Ubuntu support for graphics is still very poor? And I should use Debian?

Yes ubuntu just have 3D graphics. Not have 2D so interface is totally lag. Try debian and test it. Have a lot of bugs too. Firefly have no OS working perfect... even android released by firefly team not work very well. Have some micro stutters in video playback. I'm trying create one webserver with my box, ... but try Debian!

That is really sad to hear. From the website, it seems that the "powerful GPU". I guess the "hardware" is powerful, but honestly, what is the point of a super powerful hardware without supporting software / OS? I will try out Debian... if that still doesn't work, I might have to return it.

Yes it have powerfull graphics but no support. If you want small device for ubuntu do not buy ARM devices. This will not work 2D graphics and will have a lot of bugs and limitations. Buy other box for this propose.
Cheers

Thanks for the advice. I do need good 2D graphics as I using it for digital signage. Do you have any recommendations for similar hardware?

id recommend hard kernel's odroid boards. they have very decent performance with both cpu+gpu, decent priced and very well supported software wise so there shouldn't be any real issues with 2d/3d acceleration, at least none I've noticed on my boards. the other bonus is that they have a very active forum that should help you out should you have any issues etc that you need help/advice with in relation to their products

Yes, but i have one Odroid ux4 and 2D graphics are not working 100% too. The most perfect OS is:

Very very hardwork inside!

not sure what issues you have with the xu4, but I've got an xu3 and  C1 that both seem to run 2D/3D fine, so unless I'm not aware of something (and thats quite possible) then any of those boards should do what he needs to do without to much hassle. the main thing to point out is that Hardkernel have a very active forum community as well as a monthly magazine s there is decent support. the same cannot be said about firefly.
the other option he has would be to get a small x86 dev board that uses an atom of similar low spec cpu, these will outperform most arm boards that are available however the downside is that an x86 board is going to cost way more.

Thanks. May I know if the Odroid performs better with 2D graphics than the Firefly board? From the video, looks like it doesn't have any problem doing hardware decoding of videos.

Hi AussieJohn.
I'm very interesting to install CentOS in one Low power consuming for WEBhost propose. You know some good Board for this??
Best Regards

i use my odroid xu4 for a variety of uses and so far video playback has been very good, no noticable stutters or anything like that, runs emulators etc pretty decent too.
now i haven't done any direct comparisons between the XU4 and firefly, on paper the firefly has a better graphics core however without the support of decent drivers the odroid XU4 will outperform it currently. this will change should the firefly get real gfx driver support in the future. still the XU4 right now should do what you want, its fast, uses the big.Little cpu core structure for optimum power usage and has usb3 x2 as well as upgradable emmc flash modules. it uses the same cpu as the Samsung galaxy note 3 (if memory serves correct)

Thanks for the info. It is very helpful. Let me try out XU4.
