The VGA connector has its important usage. There're still many VGA displays around.
You have some options to get more USB ports. The first one, of couse, is using an external USB hub.
The second option, is DIY your board. If you look at the back of the USB port, you'll find eight copper pads in two lines.
And yes, you can solder a double deck usb port with wires on it.
