Exam Overview
The
Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) is a computer-based test designed to assess the knowledge and skills of aspiring pharmacy technicians. The exam typically consists of 90 multiple-choice questions, of which 80 are scored and 10 are unscored trial questions. Candidates are given approximately 2 hours to complete the exam.
The exam content is divided into four major domains:
Medications ¨C including drug names, dosage forms, interactions, and storage requirements.
Federal Requirements ¨C covering controlled substances laws, storage and disposal regulations, and recalls.
Patient Safety & Quality Assurance ¨C focusing on error prevention, risk management, and safety protocols.
Order Entry & Processing ¨C including calculations, lot numbers, equipment usage, and compounding processes.
Eligibility requires completion of a pharmacy technician training program or equivalent work experience, usually 500 hours. Passing the exam demonstrates competence and readiness to work in pharmacy settings.
