I recently came across an interesting idea of using a Firefly single-board computer to create a mini arcade machine. This seems quite promising since Firefly supports Android, Linux, and specialized OS options for emulators, making it possible to run classic arcade games or even develop a custom retro gaming experience.
I was reading here http://somagyarkaszino.com/kaszino-velemenyek/bizzo-kaszino and it inspired me to think about creating something similar but with more interactivity and personalization. I plan to use a Firefly RK3399 or AIO-3399J as the core device, connect a small touchscreen or OLED display, and add a joystick with buttons through GPIO or USB. I think this could make for an awesome standalone device for running retro games through emulators like RetroArch or MAME.
Since Firefly supports hardware-accelerated 4K video decoding and has a powerful GPU, it wouldn’t have to be limited to just emulators. It could also run simple indie games on Android. In the future, adding LED lighting, wireless connectivity for updating the game library, or even multiplayer via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi could make the project even more exciting.
What do you think of this idea? Has anyone tried something similar?
