【General】 Anyone Else Had Their Severance Agreement Reviewed?

I was recently laid off and given a severance package to sign within a pretty short timeframe. At first glance, it seemed straightforward — a set amount of pay, continuation of benefits for a limited period, and the usual confidentiality language. But once I actually sat down and read it carefully, some of the clauses felt broader than I expected.
There were sections about releasing claims, non-disparagement, and restrictions that might affect future employment. Nothing looked aggressive, just… dense. I started wondering whether I was overthinking it or if this is just how these agreements are written.
I ended up speaking with a severance agreement lawyer to get a clearer understanding of what was standard and what might be negotiable. The conversation was more about interpretation than confrontation, which I didn’t initially expect. It helped to hear how certain clauses are typically viewed in real-world situations.
Now I’m also considering whether having a severance agreement attorney formally review the final draft makes sense before signing. I’m not trying to create conflict — just trying to avoid realizing later that I misunderstood something important.
Has anyone else here gone through something similar? Did you negotiate any part of your severance, or did you find most terms were pretty fixed? Curious how common it is for employers to adjust these agreements when asked.
