Ubuntu User name and login

Whilst I booted up fine and auto logged in to a shell environment.  I installed the gui for ubuntu and now have a login name and password to put in.  I've tried many with no luck.
Firefly; firefly
firefly; firefly
firefly; Firefly
firefly;
Firefly;
root;
root;firefly

etc...
nothing works, only options is to flash again and start over but that might lead me to the same problem

you are using minimal firmware? why not using firmware that already comes with gui env
minimal system only has root user with no password, maybe you need to add a new user and password first, then install the gui
