Error -110 whilst initializing SD card

Just received my Renegade board.  Nice little piece of kit but I can’t say I’m impressed with the online instructions and resources.  The preferred SD flashing utility is, contrary to what’s stated, available for Windows only.  Etcher works fine on my Mac but the downloaded disk image is not recognized.  Adding an “.img” extension allows Etcher to proceed but who knows if that is the right thing to do.  In any case, I get a consistent Error -110 during the boot process and then the thing hangs.  This has occurred with a fresh SanDisk 32Gb SD card, a known-good 32Gb card from a Raspberry Pi, and a second known-good 8Gb card from a Raspberry Pi.  

So I’m stuck. Any suggestions?
